Review - Largo: CD Release Show - May 21, 2006

Gus Black re-turned to Largo to play a sold-out show to an enamored crowd in commemoration of his new release, Autumn Days. The album marks a move towards more personal sentimental reflection for Black, and the intimate, dimly lit pub feel of the venue provided the perfect backdrop for his precious meanderings. In the vein of his most identifiable influence, Eliot Smith, Black invited the audience to ruminate on the lingering regrets and unfulfilled desires of love lost.

Handling his guitar in a manner that exuded both intensity and casual emotionality, Black explored the darker sides of love, at times solo and at times supported by a band including Dave Palmer on piano, Gianni Neiviller on bass, and Luther Russell on guitar. Lyrics and music melded pleasantly to create a warmth and allure that is most likely precisely what the crowded room was searching for on this first night of spring. Gus Black’s new CD Autumn Days, Cheap Lullaby Records.
